Director & Agency

Luca&Sinem teamed up with iconic director Freddie Powell of DROOL to create A Good Start for Olipop and agency Callen. The film plays on the hyperbolic and outlandish advertising claims of some soft drink brands, where one sip unleashes upon the world a horde of animated "little fellas" whose presence among humans causes involuntary niceties and goodwill to tumble out.

With an accelerated timeline, live-action production, character development, animation and compositing all had to happen simultaneously rather than sequentially. While filming was taking place in South Africa, a team of artists were hard at work in London designing the characters and animated locations.

Each scene is stuffed with little fellas appearing simultaneously, and keeping the look of these cohesive was paramount. The goal was to create a vintage non-serialised style, and having a choreographed action without making the animation feel repetitive. This required coordinating multiple animators working in parallel, often with limited time for feedback. It was a careful balancing act to match the performances of the animated characters so they would complement the performance of the human actors, and not steal the limelight too much.

I'm most proud of the stuff I had least to do with! Honestly, it's probably the inside-of-the-body sequences, which were very much Luca and Sinem's baby. I'm just a sucker for stunning animation.

Featuring a playful reimagining of The Chordettes’ classic hit “Lollipop,” updated with the lyric “Olipop, Olipop,” the spot introduces a cast of animated prebiotic characters that represent the positive impact of better-for-you soda.
