Director Anthony Farquhar-Smith, on making Chase Distillery

Not To Scale, Anthony F-S and Forever Beta tell the unique ‘Field to Bottle Story’ of the Chase Vodka and Gin Distillery through a beautifully designed collage and stop motion animation.

Chase distillery is the brainchild of William Chase of Tyrrell’s fame. William loves his potato farm in Herefordshire and this passion is evident in the product. The handmade feel and artistry of the film mirrors the ethos and craft of the bespoke Gin and Vodka.  Not To Scale and Anthony FS wanted to impart some of this love, craft and aesthetic to the film.

‘Chase have a certain attitude and aesthetic for everything they do, and part of this involves eccentricity and humour. Luckily these are two characteristics that I always like to try and put into a film.’ Anthony FS

The collage for the film was created from a rich and diverse source of imagery; some already existed within the Chase library, others were captured on location at the farm and distillery.  The final elements came from a 6 day studio shoot where real items were animated and photographed ranging from maps and diagrams to toy tractors and soil. Transitioning from one scene to the next was achieved by moving elements of each scene to follow the changing locations of the narrative, almost like stagehands moving scenery in a theatre.

The most challenging aspect of making these films was juggling the huge number of elements required to make the collages, animating them in the most elegant way and ensuring that they all sat naturally together to create images that were as faithful to the original designs and also as engaging and entertaining as possible.
